Extra making and  soldering tips

  • Wire gauge: I find I'm learning a lot in this experience of trying to fashion this monstrosity.  First off, for anyone who's paying attention and thinking of trying this project yourself, some tips: -16 gauge metal wire is a bit thick and unwieldy, although it does hold its shape well once it's been bent; 20 gauge or higher is too thin, much thinner than the original. Perhaps 18 is the magic number!
  • Leaves: thin sheets of gold embossing metal work extraordinarily well for the gold leaves wound in the crown, and they are thin enough to shape  and bend at will, and to cut out with ordinary scissors.  ;)
  • Solder type: for amateur solder-ers (like me), find a soldering wire or paste with a high silver content, instead of lead. Silver has a low flow temperature, and keeps a much better joint than a high lead content paste or wire; I'm finding this out because my solder joints keep popping, and I haven't even tried to bent the crown into a circle yet!
  • Using a soldering iron: don't let your iron get too hot; if the solder metal is melting with in two seconds of touching it to the iron, it won't make a good joint; wipe it with a wet cloth, or unplug it for a while!
