All about Armor
Armor plays a very
important part in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. The
production design team went to great lengths to create different armor for
each of the "races". One look and you understand the race who wears
it.
The LOTR movies use a combination of just about every
technique imaginable. The top heroes were dressed in hand forged
armor decorated and tool in a detail level that cannot be seen on screen.
They wear "real" maille for close-ups and do a number of the "hero" extras.
Stunt armor is cast in plastic. The next level of extras used plastic
ring maille and less defined molded armor. For the far background, the
Weta and the wardrobe department used color and textures like knitted
sweaters to imply armor. PJ and his team blended them seamlessly into
magic on the screen.
Here we are just presenting an intro to armor and chain
maille. We will look at both the "real" thing and great ways to
"cheat" the look. Look in the character
section for each race for the actual pictures. Here we will get
into the the techniques shared by all.
