News bits

Here's the latest main updates for our LOTR costume research... as well as any really important costume links we've found lately.

Exhibit news is <here> in it's own section

5/1/08 - Contest Announcement

All you costume detail chasers out there... we at LOTR Costume
have decided to stage a fun, more than little obsessive, contest
around the book, "The Hobbit", while we wait for the first images
from the movie to dribble out.

The rules are simple. Read "The Hobbit". Look for anything that
describes what the characters are wearing or carrying. (Props count
as much towards the character as their basic garments. What would
Bilbo be without the Ring.) Check out our webiste for Book Hobbit
Costume Descriptions and see if you have found something new. Drop
us a note at http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/LOTR_Costume/ . If
you are the first one to give us new details, you get entered in our
prize drawing.

The folks over at the Red Backed Book Yahoo group really combed the
book already to get us a lot of detail. See what we've posted so far
on our web at http://alleycatscratch.com/lotr/The-Hobbit.htm .
We're betting there's more out there. Don't just look for the words
like "a party hood". Look deeper. If a character fires an arrow,
doesn't that mean that he's got a quiver and a bow with him??? If a
character is fighting, what is he fighting with? If he draws his
sword.... No guesses... but note that he has a weapon with him. Did
we get everyone's pockets described??? And what they carry in
them???

Some things really do need to be inferred. We figured the Trolls
have to have shirts... since they do have sleeves "to wipe their
greasy mouths while eating roast mutton". Maybe it's tunics... but
we doubt they're just wearing "shrugs"... those sleeve only thing
some of the girls in the club scene wear.

When in doubt... report a detail. We'll argue together what it
describes/implies.

How the prize works: Contributing a new detail gets you entered in
the drawing. If you win, you get to pick anything in the Alley Cat
Scratch Costume Cafe Press Shop. (Geeze, type that fast 5 times.)
http://www.cafepress.com/acscostume/ . The winner gets to pick
anything from the ACS store -- a t-shirt, a book bag, a mouse pad, a
sketch journal or anything else.

The details: The contest is running now though the end of the
month... so that's through May 31, 2008. Winner will be notified the
next week.

Anyone can play and contribute. Folks that already started playing
at Red Back Book will also be entered into the drawing for tips they
already submitted as well as any new info found and can keep playing
on their group as well. Main play will be submitted at our LOTR
Costume Yahoo group (
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/LOTR_Costume/ ). Just create a
message to the group with the character's name in the heading and
post your info. (If it's a bit subjective... give us a line or two
from the book or lightly describe the details.) If both groups get
the detail on the same day, both folks will be entered. (The LOTR
Costume mods can play too, but don't get entered in the drawing.)

If we have a tie or a near tie in submission, we'll enter both. New
folks will be on moderate, but the mods can see the time of their
submissions... and if Yahoo gets mushy, we'll error on the side of
crediting multiple folks.

When describing the new tidbit, try to stay away from spoilers in the
details. Ex: we're saying that Bard fires a "Black Arrow" but not at
who or where he's aiming. (If you're read the book, you know what
we're not saying... if you haven't... you won't try and reach though
the screen and kills us.) This means that some description may give
away more than you want to know of the story... but remember, we list
what we need to describe a costume or set the scene. So just be
careful. If in doubt what to say or not, contact us off line first.

So... grab "The Hobbit" and start reading it again!!!!! (Consider
this practice for when we start seeing art.)

4/23/08

We've got the preliminary information up for "The Hobbit" costumes.  These are based on the book.  We know they'll change for the movie... but it's a fun starting point!

If you can find any more details, even a word or two... please chime in.

We're focusing on getting this monster up on new software so all energies are behind the scenes as we prep.  We're aiming for a fusion of Gallery 2 & Interspire's Article Live.  If you know either of these two, or CSS templates or a bit of PHP  and are willing to join us in beating things into submission, please contact us off line.  Help! <glub> <glub>

The news section has been horribly neglected.  Sorry all.  I think I've got almost all the stuff that crashed fixed. Yes, there are a few bits missing, but I think I can recover them once we start going though section by section since I saved all the old mails.

Links still need fixing and massive amounts of updates...

For older info... please check our New Archive.
