Young Hobbits

What really makes a hobbit beyond size???  Simple, it's all about the feet and the ears.  See our research on Hobbit Children in our main section.  Hobbit clothing is going to be very comfortable by it's very nature.

In a pinch, you can use the child's ren fair outfit, if they have one.  Shorten the hems, or wear last year's.

Feet

Stay away from complex feet.  Go for options like socks or slippers or covered shoes.  Kids want to run and play, not worry about patches of things staying on their feet.

Ears

You have more options here.  You know your child best.  How long will they sit  to have ears put on???  Just because they're older, doesn't mean they're going to sit still for long... or fiddle with the ear tips that took a half hour to put on and rip them off in 5 minutes because they itch.

Ears may be something you need to discuss with the older kids?  Do they want to suffer for their costume????

At the easiest end of the scale, we have Band-aid ears.  These work a lot better than they sound and go on in just moments.  Next up the scale are things like ears made from craft foam.  There are lots of suggestions on the Quick Ears page.

If you do want to go for the more advance techniques, check out our main Hobbit Feet in our makeup section.

Hobbit Lad

First off, forget the coat unless it's really cold and you're just bundling them for warmth... or it will be the first thing lost.  Frodo wana-be's would much rather have an elven cloak with a quick elven pin that they can help you make.

They need short trouser, brown or dark.  Last year's trousers can work well here.  If you don't have anything you want to cut off or hem just for a night.... duct tape is your friend.

Shirt, light colored button down or ren shirt.  If they're a generic hobbit, you could do plaid... but non-T-shirt style is the key.

You could stop there... but if you've got more time... most of the hobbits had vests or suspenders.

That's all you need!!!!  The ears and feet tell the story.

Hobbit Lasses

The girls in the movie are shown with print jumpers.  If you've got a jumper that looks earthy enough, just add a peasant chemise.

If your girl does ren-fair, shorten the hem.  (Duct tape is your friend).

If you have neither,  you're going to need to make something.  Go for a chemise and renaissance style jumper.  Hem it shorter.

Make them an apron or kerchief.

Do they want a basket???  Or, do they want a swirly cape like their brother???  (OK, we didn't see hobbit ladies in cloaks, but the gents have them.)
