The Nasty Villains - Book Costume Descriptions

from The Hobbit book

Tolkien's Middle-earth would be nothing without the wide collection of nasty villains - a Dragon, Goblins and Trolls .  The book's characters are less scary than the later LOTR books, since "The Hobbit" is a kid's story.

Tolkien's costume description are minimal.  However everyone has clothing... and pockets are very important.  There is no clarification if they wear more ragged, grungier version of the Hobbit clothing, or the more simple garments of the men.

Character Index

Smaug - the Dragon

  • Smaug is a red-gold dragon with an enormous tail and wings.  He  breathes fire.
  • The dragon has a soft underbelly almost completely encrusted with gems from his horde.  (Smaug is a costumer's dream... glitter  and glow and many shiny things he hords.)

Goblins

They normally wear hard soled shoes or boots.  Goblins would put on soft shoes for sneaking around in tunnels quietly.

They carry red & black banners.

Trolls

The Trolls wear much more clothes than in the latest movie.

  • They wear shirts with sleeves...
    • to wipe their greasy mouths while eating roast mutton
  • They wear trousers with pockets...
    • so they can be picked
