For a lot more details on the original King Kong, check out disk 2 of King Kong Special Edition DVD.  The folks at Weta start with the original plans, build an armature, wrapped it and then added the rabbit fur.  Then watch them build their own reenactment of of the Spider Pit scene.  (It's a diary of hard core recreation and detail chasing just as obsessive as any of our costume recreation.)
