Maggie - USA

Frodo Baggins

I did not use any specific patterns for the pants, coat, shirt, or vest, but just traced the patterns of clothing items that were similar.  The cape is Simplicity 9887.  The fabric for the cape is a dark green moleskin.  The elven brooch I bought from the Noble Collection.

The coat is made out of a velveteen-like fabric.  It is lined with dark brown a silk blend suit lining fabric.  The lapels and collar are made out of dark brown cotton velveeten (it can be bought at Hancock Fabrics).  The buttons, which are La Mode 29390, are dark brown leather (3/4").

The vest is made of the same cotton velveteen from Hancock's only in a lighter shade.  The pants are made of the dark brown velveteen.

The shirt is made of a heavy weight muslin type material, and the sleeves are regular muslin.  I did this so the sleeves are more flexible and not so stiff.  Both fabrics are made a cream color, not pure white.

The backpack is made out of different shades of vinyl.  I made a cylinder shape out of the main fabric (which is a burgundy color) and used leather cording to make a drawstring.  I made three side pouches out of different vinyl.

The wig that I am wearing is Nola by Wig America for $30 in shade number 2 (thanks for the link, Alley Cat Scratch!)

The ears are the "Demon Ears" by Woochie Cinema Secrets.  Even though they're called demon ears, they seem perfect for Hobbit ears.

The ring is one that I bought at a local Renaissance Faire. The chain is the one from New Line Cinema Shop.

The Phial of Galadriel is just a bottle that I bought at Michael's Craft Store for only $1.00

Trying to think of something for the furry feet without buying them was difficult.  Instead of gluing the curly doll hair on my feet, I took little bits of hair and sewed it to nylon knee socks.  What I did was take a clump of hair that was between one and three inches long and tied a knot at the top of it.  I pulled at the hair to make it look furry.  I sewed the pieces of hair on the socks by sewing through the knot I made.  This does take a while to do, but I think it's easier than gluing the hair on your foot every time you want to dress up.  You could also do this with regular nylons, they don't have to be the knee socks that  I used.

I've made many costumes before, but this one took the longest!  I started about two months ago (although I haven't been able to work on it everyday).  I'm planning on making a new vest that I can wear to the premiere of ROTK.  Of course costuming is hard, but it's fun and worth the effort!  :)
