4 ½ yds. Medium green flannel-prewashed

bullet

2 yds. Celtic braid trim

fabric paint

leather scraps

bullet

metal medallions from belt

cloak clasp

Note- all material was washed on machine handwash cycle, the wool and flannel machine dried on perm. press-use a test scrap 1st!  The trim was handwashed, hung to dry and steampressed.

Pattern adapted from Butterick 4030, view C, which gave me the fullness I wanted as the Rohan Guard cloak appears to be a half circle to accommodate armor which I didn’t plan and reasoning the nobility might wear a similar cloak, which would be more practical (and warm- it is ¾ lined in flannel)

The V shaped capelet-which may be a strange smaller hood, but I was never able to work out the dimensions that would fit and still look like the pictures I was able to collect.  Still it appears to be too gathered in some pictures to be just a capelet so this is my interpretation.  I simply played around with folding a rectangle of fabric into a triangle (rather like a paper hat) till I was happy with the shape & fit.   The underside is lined in flannel, which helps it hang evenly and not stick to itself.  It is attached to the neckline like a hood.  I braided narrow strips of leather as an edging around the neckline, attached with invisible thread.  There are also oblong circles of the same leather under the celtic style cloak clasp as reinforcing.

The closest I was able to get to the celtic circle trim was a “running” braid.  It did not come with a red background so I used red fabric paint to hand paint the rose colored background.

I only put trim on the capelet, although on the Rohan Guard cloak there is trim on each side of the cloak opening from top to bottom.

I found a metal belt at a discount store that had sun medallion decoration.  I removed 2, backed them with leather and mounted pins for attaching to the cloak at the shoulder.  I tried running the trim past the capelet partially over the shoulder with poor results.  Without the armor underneath it just didn’t hang right.  I finally gave up, although I may work on it in the future.  I like how it looks on the Rohan Guards.
