Will's family - United Kingdon
Middle-Earth Family Day
We
have just had a 'Lord of the Rings' family day. All of our family
came, dressed as characters from LOTR and we watched all the films, in
order. We watched ' The Fellowship of the Ring' at breakfast time (
great pastries, doughnuts etc), we watched ' The Two Towers’ after
lunch, and we watched ' Return of the King' after tea/ supper. We also
played LOTR games, Top Trumps, LOTR Pass the Parcel etc, a LOTR quiz
and we acted out scenes from the stories.
Our house was decorated with LOTR characters, Shelob, Treebeard,
Fellbeasts and the main Hobbits, Elves, Orcs, Baddies and Humans. We had
Sauron's eye in a corner, scary and the dining room was 'The Prancing Pony'
at Bree.
We couldn't find any LOTR table napkins, cups, or plates, in the shops so
we decorated our own.
The characters were brilliant, Grandma was Bilbo Baggins as she looks
just like him anyway! I (Will) was Frodo, George was Sam, my great-aunt
Gillie was Gollum!! Great Uncle Peter was Gimli ( he even smoked some of our
garden weeds in his pipe!! Cousin Katy and Cousin-in-law Rob were
Ringwraiths, Mummy was Arwen, Aunty Googie was Galadriel, Cousin Estelle was
Eowyn, Uncle Alex was Legolas. Cousins-in-law Stevie and Nigel and Cousin
Peter all came as Gandalf the White, Great Aunty Cathy was an elf lady, Baby
cousins, Arthur and Jennifer, were little Hobbits and Cousin Anna was an
elf maiden. It was a brilliant day and everyone looked amazing, especially
Great Aunty Gillie / Gollum.
The costumes were all made from old clothes, charity shop finds etc.
|
|
Aunty Googie as Galadriel. She wore the
pale blue dress that she bought for Baby cousin Arthur’s Christening.
She wore an antique necklace on her head |
Uncle Alex as Legolas. He wore his own
shirt and trousers and an old waistcoat of Grandmas. His long hair was
made from yellow wool fastened with hair grips. |
|
|
Great Uncle Peter as Gimli. He wore a
shirt and waistcoat. His beard etc., was made from wool and his helmet
was a helmet covered with paper. He made his pipe from wood, and it
really worked. His knees were very sore from walking on them!!
|
Myself, Will, (the tallest Hobbit) as
Frodo, wearing my own shirt, a charity shop waistcoat and cropped
trousers. The hairs were drawn on my feet using Grandma’s eyeliner.
George as Sam wearing rolled up jeans, a charity shop waistcoat and his
dad’s checked shirt. Great Aunty Gillie, as Gollum. Her costume was made
from old tights, (pantyhose). She wore old leggings and a vest top under
them. She made Gollum’s loin cloth from an old towel. She wore old
tights over her hands and arms and she wore a ‘bald head’ wig on her
head. Her make-up was done so that it blotted out most of her features
and she wore grey eye shadow under her eyes. She looked amazing. |
|
|
The Fellowship plus Gandalf, cousin
Peter, and baby Arthur Hobbit; unfortunately Aragorn couldn’t make the
party, even though Grandma pleaded! Gandalf wore a long white towelling
robe, a purchased hat and a beard made from white quilt stuffing
material. He carried a long staff made from wood, white shiny material
etc. |
Two baby Hobbits, cousins Arthur and
Jennifer, wearing cut-down baby clothes. Arthur’s waistcoat is a
cut-down babygro. Jennifer is carrying a rather large ring; a swimming
ring covered in gold wrapping paper. |
|
|
Grandma, as Bilbo, wearing an old,
original 70s, white baggy top, cropped black trousers and a ‘charity
shop’ waistcoat. I think she got the tiny blue Gandalf key ring,
attached to her waistcoat, from Father Christmas!! The hairs on her
feet were drawn on using her eyeliner. I’m not sure whether Bilbo
actually wears a watch!! |
Three LOTR ladies. Mummy wore her lilac
bridesmaid’s dress as Arwen, Great Aunty Cathy bought her elven ears in
a party shop.
|
|
|
Cousin Katy as a Ringwraith. She already
owned the strange dress but used black tights, pantyhose, over her hands
and face. She was really scary, but then she always is!! Cousin Stevie,
as Gandalf the White, wore what looked like an old angel dress and a
long blond wig. |
Eowyn, cousin Estelle, fights a
Ringwraith, cousin-to-be Rob. Eowyn had the front of her hair plaited
and then used the plaits to hold the rest of her hair. She hired her
dress from a costume outfitters. It was a medieval style. |
|
|
The Ringwraith costume was a cloak and
gown, made from old material, in a simple tee shape. To ensure that the
hood stuck out, Rob made an inner form from a piece of plastic. The
sword isn’t really sticking through his head!! Rob’s face was covered
with the top of a pair of tights.
|
Another Gandalf, cousin Nigel, with
another elven maiden, cousin Anna and a baby Hobbit in Mufti! I don’t
remember that part of the story!!! Anna’s dress is her own, in a
medieval style, she is wearing a bought tiara and her ears are made from
flesh coloured felt. Gandalf is wearing a white, angel style gown, a
cloak made from gathering a piece of silver material and adding ties.
The beard is made from cotton wool and he is wearing a white leather
belt, with silver stars, which was found abandoned in the street!! Has
the real Gandalf been around here?? |
|
|
Two baby Hobbits kissing. Aah. Is it baby
Samwise Gangee and baby Rosie Cotton? |
