Arwen's Rose Dress

by Maggie

This dress I made by modifying Butterick 6630.   The overdress I made out of a rose colored crushed velvet that I found at JoAnn's Fabrics.   The sleeves I changed from the pattern; I made the upper sleeves tighter and then made the lower sleeves in a bell shape.   I added gold trim along the neckline also.   The train in the back of the dress is just under two feet long.

The under dress is made of a light pink embossed silk - it has imprints of flowers on it.   This fabric I found at Hancock's Fabrics in the bridal section.   For the underdress I just used the same pattern from Butterick 6630 and only modified the neckline.   The sleeves are simple and form fitting. There is no zipper on either the under or over dress - both just can slip over the head.

The ears are the small alien ear tips by Woochie that I bought at a costume store.  The wig is called "Color Showgirl" by Wow Wigs in shade 2.  Here's the link:  http://store.yahoo.com/wowwigs/colorshowgirl.html

The headpiece is a one that I found at a Renaissance Faire at the chainmaille shop.   I just thought it looked good with this costume!!   The contacts I am wearing are called Eden by Freshlook Dimensions.   They're not prescription contacts, they're just for color.   You can't see my feet, but I have deep rose sandals that I also got at the Renaissance Faire that go perfect with this dress.

Aragorn

worn by Danny

I made the coat out of black pleather that has a grain in it that makes it look like real leather.  This fabric can be found at almost any fabric.  I did not use a pattern for the coat, but just traced a similar coat to get the shape and then I altered it.  The coat comes down below the knees and has a split down the back.  It also has splits along both sides.  I wove black satin cording around the waist seam, the seam of the sleeves, and the seam where the sleeve is attached to the coat.  On the right sleeve, I used leftover scraps the make a basket weave pattern.  I took long pieces that were between one and two inches wide and wove it together, gluing the strips down where they overlapped.  I then sewed this piece to the sleeve.

The vest I made out of black cotton and put brown grommets on both sides so that it can be closed using black leather cording.  It is the same pattern as the coat, only shorter and without the sleeves.  The shirt and pants are just regular clothes that I did not make.

For the boots and gauntlets I used black vinyl, silver grommets, and black cording.  The boots are actually only upper parts that were measured to fit my cousin and he's wearing black shoes.  The gauntlets were made just by measuring the circumference of the wrist and the forearm.  The right gauntlet has a fingerless glove, but a hole for the thumb.

The sword is made out of wood.  First, I made a scale drawing of the sword, traced it on the piece of wood and cut it out, and then painted it.  The sheathe is made out of cardboard.  I made a long, thin box that the sword would fit in and then made the same thing out of black vinyl.  I then slipped the cardboard sheathe in the vinyl one and sewed it to a belt made out of the same material.

The wig is called Wayne by Wilshire Wigs (here is the link)  WAYNE: Wilshire Wigs and Accessories
For the beard, a black eyeliner pencil was used to draw it on.

This costume was not too hard to make, but making the sheathe, boots, and gauntlets were probably the most difficult parts.  Over the summer, my cousin and I went to a Renaissance Faire, and he was complemented on his costume and even recognized as Aragorn!

Gandalf the Grey

by Maggie and Danny

The hat was made using the hat pattern from Simplicity 9887.  The fabric is a blue wool type fabric that has light interfacing in the brim.  I tried putting wire and then cardboard in the brim, but it was way too stiff.  It's supposed to be floppy anyway, though :)

The robe and cloak are made out of grey, light weight suiting material that I found on sale at Hancock Fabrics.  I did not use a pattern for either of these.  The robe I made by just by tracing a shirt and making it much longer and the sleeves wider.  The cloak is actually just a long, rectangular piece of fabric.  I put snaps in the center of the longer side of the rectangle for the clasp that goes around the neck.  Snaps were placed in the center of the two shorter sides to go around the wrist.

The belt is just a very long braided leather belt that I bought.  The bag is made out of brown vinyl and the strap is made out of braided twine.  Another smaller bag was made out of the same brown vinyl as a drawstring pouch with green twine.  The staff is just a broken tree branch that I found.  The beard was bought at a local costume shop.

Hobbits

Sam worn by Danny

For this costume, we found a shirt, vest, and pants that looked similar to Sam's costume and altered them.  The pants were just hemmed up to the correct length.  The jacket was made by tracing a similar jacket.  Brown patches were added on the elbows.

The backpack was made of brown vinyl with a pattern that we made up.  This is not exactly like Sam's pack in the movie - we altered it.  Straps were added on the bottom of the pack for the blanket roll.  White rope was used for the Elven rope and a pot was attached.

The ears are the Demon Ears by Woochie, and the wig is by Paula Young.  I'm not sure what the name of the wig is, though.
