Lauren & Zeb  - Western Australia

Legends of Knighthood

My armour was created from cheap lino which I treated with 'ESP' (causes paint to stick to any surface) and then spray painted it silver. I to make a template from butcher's paper first though. I connected the armour together with punch eyelets, leather thonging and split rings.

The navy cape was just a cheap heavy drill material, and the broaches simply large bottle caps with buttons glued on the top, later spray painted silver and gold. The sword was constructed of light weight wood, and the scabbard made of lino painted with acrylic black and brown. The sword was attached to my waist by means of a cheap leather belt and old handbag attachments. The 'chain maille' was simply a look-alike material sewed onto the sleeves of a long-sleeved shirt and the excess was created as a 'skirt'. The helmet was also made of lino, shaped and glued to fit over my riding helmet. Real white horse hair formed the decorative piece on top and the mail was constructed of a piece of garden poly pipe which I cut into many thin rings and fixed together with small slits and glue. I then spray painted this lightly to get a tarnished black-silver effect.

My horse, Zeb, is adorned in the same lino armour that I wore, which formed plates going down his neck, and a chamfron to supposedly guard his face. His breast shield was secured to his black breastplate with thick, strong twine. His knight rug and rein drape were made of a large burgundy table cloth, on which I sewed cream fringing and golden piping. The rug was secured with proper leg straps and a saddle blanket underneath prevented the saddle from slipping as the rug was quite slippery.

Lastly the banner pole was made of a thick dowelling which I stained dark and created a Roman-style hand guard out of thin ply wood (which was actually my father's old bait board!!). I secured a golden spear head on the top and made the flags and banner out of the left over material from Zeb's and my costume. And there you have it...knight and steed ready for battle! Well almost...
