Legolas Rivendell Council Velvet

Legolas arrives in Rivendell for Elrond's Council wearing a simple velvet long wrap over his standard two tone suede jerkin. The cloak/cape is made from a brown/mustard silk velvet. It has an unusual design.  It is slit in back to allow his quiver to come though.  We are calling it a cloak, but in some ways its closer to a poncho because the sides are fully open.

The basic shape is simple.  It has a soft cowl collar.  The neckline fastens in front in two places, overlapping to either side of the neck so there is  about a 6 inch cross over.  The back is two entirely separate pieces of fabric, just attached at the neck.  There may be an inch or two of overlap or the turned over edges may be butted against each other, but we only see the back as Legolas dismounts the horse... so we're not quite sure yet.

The lengths of fabric reach almost all the way to the floor.  The sides are tapered  and NOT stitched closed.  The front edge curves up... (so that the sides will NOT drag on the ground like an aba.)

Making the cloak:

The cloak/cape is made from a  silk velvet. If you're reproducing it, consider stretch velvet to get the same look. for less dollars.  The cowl collar seam will need to be reinforced to take the weight of the rest of the fabric.  Probably all that is needed is to stitch everything to a bit of bias tape.  This will stabilize it and keep it from stretching.

There does not appear to be a seam at the shoulder in the original, so it's just two lengths of fabric  over lapped at neck in front .

Taper the side edges, it looks like about a one inch doubled turned under hem all around the edge.
