Making a Clay Rosette

by Katia Nye

In the final scenes of ROTK we see Rosie wearing a simple choker.  The flower is blurry.  It's hard to tell what the flower is, but it makes sense for it to be a rose....

A rosette is very simple to construct with clay.

It's very easy to make your own roses out of Sculpey clay (or other
polymer clay).

You start with little balls, graduating in size, and squish them into circles. You start with the center, the smallest circle, and pinch it around so that it's like a little bitty taco.
You then add the other circles around the center, pulling the top edges out a bit to look like rose petals. Use gradually larger circles as you get toward the outer petals, use as many as you like to get a rose the size you want.
To make it like Rosie's, a necklace that'll lay flat, chill the rose for a few minutes so it won't distort and chop the bottom off so it's flat. See how much flatter the rose is here, it will lay nicely now.

Put a little wire loop or eye pin through the top & bake it. Voila, a rose pendant.

Baking for something the size of this flower  would probably be 15-20 minutes at 275 degrees Farenheit.  You'd want to check it so it didn't scorch at the ends of the petals, but that isn't even very important if you're going to paint it.

Do not microwave polymer clays; they will burst into flame and produce toxic gasses.
