Check out AOL's City Guide for Los Angeles.  Search by Key Word and narrow down you choice by area or category.  They have a special Halloween section with events broken down by category, including a kid friendly section.  They also have photo tours of haunted hotels and other fun stuff to get you in the mood.

Los Angeles Almanac list a lot of family friendly activities for October  including street fairs, harvest festivals and museum days.

They list the events by month now, so you'll need to check the dates yourself.

The Los Angeles Times' CalendarLive.com has a long list of children's happenings and costume contests - most on the Saturday and Sunday before Halloween. 

At-LA.com is a nice directory of many event links and other directories,   Halloween just being one of them.
